Knicks Turned Down Deal For Fernandez

Knicks president Donnie Walsh recently rejected a three-team deal that would have sent Anthony Randolph to Indiana, a first-round pick to Portland and Rudy Fernandez to New York, according to a team source.

The Knicks have been linked to Fernandez, who wants out of Portland and has listed New York as one of his preferred destinations.

The Trail Blazers want a first-round pick for Fernandez, which means the Knicks need to get a third team involved.

Nets Could Wait For Carmelo To Become Free Agent

The Nets may have the pieces to swing a trade for Carmelo Anthony, but that would require the Nuggets to change their current stance on the All-Star forward.

New Jersey has the young players and draft picks to make a deal, but there is another way they could acquire Anthony in the not-so-distant future.

Unless Anthony signs a contract extension with Denver, which he's been offered, he'll hit the free agent market after the 2010-11 season.

The Nets are projected to have roughly $20 million in cap space, more than enough to court Anthony.

Hawks, Horford Haven't Talked Extension

The Hawks want to extend the contract of big man Al Horford, but talks on an extension haven't yet begun.

Atlanta can extend him for up to five years and $82 million by Oct. 31 or tender him to make him a restricted free agent next summer.

"I haven't heard anything yet," Horford said.

"I think anything will start coming once training camp gets going. I am just kind of leaving to that to the owners and my representation and just seeing what happens. I am going to keep working hard and keep doing what I've been doing."

The Pacers are making it clear to rookie guard Lance Stephenson that his recent behavior will not be tolerated.

Stephenson allegedly pushed his girlfriend down a flight of stairs last month.

The team hasn't even allowed him to work out at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Knicks Remain Interested In Fernandez

The Knicks are still interested in acquiring guard Rudy Fernandez from the Trail Blazers.

Portland isn't pleased with Fernandez and agent Andy Miller, who went public with their trade request.

Alan Hahn of Newsday writes that, "So several NBA insiders have suggested to me that Portland will exhaust all other options before they'd even consider doing Rudy a favor and sending him exactly where he wants to go, especially if the Knicks aren't offering anything they really want. And what they want is a first round pick."

George Karl Officially Cleared To Return

Nuggets coach George Karl has officially been cleared by his doctors to return to the game he loves.

"It's official," Karl said Thursday. "I've been cleared to go for it. My PET scan came back great."

Karl is coming off his second battle with cancer in five years.

"In three months, I'm going to have another PET scan," he said. "I'll probably have three or four more PET scans in the next year. And then the second year it won't be that many, it might be only two, but you've still got to go through them.

"The one they did, they were very positive on. In general, they said they couldn't find any cancer cells and it looked great. I think the word was 'excellent.' It was an excellent scan as the doctor defines it."

Cleveland's Roster Unlikely To Change

Aside from waiting on Jawad Williams, the Cavaliers are unlikely to make any roster changes between now and the start of training camp.

Williams, a restricted free agent, received a $1.03 million qualifying offer from Cleveland back in June.

"We like Jawad," general manager Chris Grant said. "We'll get into training camp and see what happens. We have a qualifying offer out to him. I haven't heard one way or the other. Obviously, we'd like him to come to camp and compete and make his mark on being part of the team."

The remainder of the roster appears set.

"Are we done at this particular time?" Cavaliers coach Byron Scott asked. "Probably so.

"I look at what we have right now and am excited. I can't wait for the next three weeks to go by to get to work."
