North Carolina reruit Harrison Barnes became the first Iowan to win the Morgan Wootten Player of the Year Award as the nation’s best player.

LeBron James and Dwight Howard previously won the Wootten Award.

“It’s a great honor to be named the national player of the year, something that LeBron James and Kobe Bryant have won,” Barnes said. “I’m very humbled by that.”

Barnes was a finalist for the Naismith Award, which was given to Jared Sullinger, who will attend Ohio State.

Sullinger and Barnes will play on opposing teams in the McDonald’s All-American game on March 31 in Columbus
