Nike Matches Under Armour's $285M Deal For Kevin Durant

Aug 31, 2014 8:11 PM

Nike has exercised its right to match Under Armour's endorsement offer to Kevin Durant, according to sources.

Nike has countered a proposal of $265 to $285 million and believes it will re-sign Durant to a deal for the next 10 years.

Kevin Durant confirmed his new deal with Nike on Twitter on Sunday night.

The deal between Nike and Durant could hit up to $300 million based on royalties. Nike officials told Durant and his team at Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports on Saturday that it would indeed step up enough to allow the world's largest shoe and apparel company to keep him.

There were strong indications that Durant would go to Under Armour, and the decision has weighed heavily on him, according to sources.

Under Armour wooed Stephen Curry to join them and leave Nike last year, but they have now missed out on Durant and Blake Griffin, who joined the Jordan Brand.

Thunder Name Mark Daigneault Head Coach Of D-League Affiliate

Aug 22, 2014 10:03 PM

The Oklahoma City Thunder named Mark Daigneault as the head coach of its D-League team.

“Mark has placed a high value on development throughout his career and we feel that he is well aligned with the goals of our organization,” said Presti. “His experience at Florida under Coach Donovan has provided him the platform to apply his intelligence and relationship skills to help strengthen the program. We are excited about Mark joining the organization and continuing his professional growth.”

Daigneault joins the Thunder organization after spending the past four years working under Billy Donovan at the University of Florida where he most recently held the position of Assistant to the Head Coach. Last season, the Gators became the first SEC team to go 18-0 in conference play, and during Daigneault’s four years at Florida, the program posted a 120-30 record (.800) while advancing to the Elite Eight each season.

“Mark has been a valuable member of our staff the past four seasons, and I'm very happy to see him get this opportunity with a great organization,” said University of Florida Head Coach Billy Donovan. “We all wish him the best of luck and know he'll do a tremendous job.”

Prior to arriving at Florida, the Leominster, Mass. native spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Holy Cross.

Under Armour Makes 10-Year, $285M Offer To Kevin Durant

Aug 20, 2014 10:16 PM

Under Armour has presented to Kevin Durant a 10-year offer worth as much as $285 million.

Durant's represenation Roc Nation Sports informed Nike of the offer on Wednesday.

The deal includes Under Armour stock and other incentives, such a community center built in his mother's name, whose exact worth will not be known for some time.

Nike has the right to match the offer made by Under Armour and Durant could also still choose Nike if it doesn't match.

Nike's last offer, sources said, would have given Durant a base and a minimum royalty guarantee that would equal no less than $20 million a year.

Because Under Armour has such a small basketball business, the company has to guarantee Durant his money up front, instead of the typical shoe deals that offer a minimum guarantee plus up to 5 percent royalty on the wholesale revenues.

After four years at Duke, Thomas went undrafted in 2010 and spent parts of three seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans. Thomas has averaged 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 106 NBA games.

Durant Has Played 930 More Total Minutes Than LeBron In Past Five Years

Aug 10, 2014 2:10 PM

Kevin Durant's withdrawl from USA Basketball appeared to be a confession, and the Oklahoma City Thunder star admitted he was mentally and physically exhausted.

No player has logged more combined regular season and playoff minutes over the past three seasons than Durant, who has played 10,924 minutes. LeBron James sits in second with 10,811, even with three straight trips to the NBA Finals in that window.

Over the past five seasons, Durant’s 15,064 minutes also pace all players and are 930 more than James, who is No. 2 on that list.

Thunder coach Scott Brooks said last October that he likes to keep Durant’s minutes between 38 and 40. The Thunder could be forced to look into monitoring Durant's minutes with more frequency.

“As we go forward there’s no question that’s something we want to look at and understand,” Thunder general manager Sam Presti said about Durant’s minutes at the end of the season. “Not only for the long term, but to also make sure we are getting the most out of the minutes that are played during one particular game or another…I can’t tell you what comes of it.”

Aug 8, 2014 10:19 AM

Jerry Colangelo said that Kevin Durant didn't seem himself last week during USA Basketball's training camp in Las Vegas.

Durant announced his decision to withdraw from the team on Thursday, citing mental and physical fatigue.

"Kevin [Durant] wasn’t quite Kevin last week," Colangelo said. "There was a lot of stuff, speculation. I don’t know what it was. A lot of things with him. So when I got the call, I want to say it wasn’t a total surprise about him not feeling capable of going forward physically and mentally.

“He needed to get away. You got to deal with it. That’s all. It is what it is.”
