Kevin Durant To Make Suns Debut On Wednesday Versus Hornets

Feb 28, 2023 11:25 PM

Kevin Durant is set to make his Phoenix Suns debut on Wednesday against the Charlotte Hornets.

Durant, who has been out with an MCL sprain since January 8, completed several practices over the past two weeks since getting traded to the Suns.

"I know it ain't gonna be that smooth. It's gonna take me some time to get used to everything early on, but as far as just having fun and just getting lost in the game, I'm looking forward to doing that again," said Durant.

Durant will be on a minutes restriction upon his return.

Derrick Rose, Knicks Haven't Discussed Buyout Amid Reported Interest From Suns

Feb 26, 2023 8:04 AM

Derrick Rose claims there have been no discussions with the New York Knicks about a buyout amid potential interest from the Phoenix Suns.

“No, I haven’t talked to anybody about that. I haven’t talked to anyone,” Rose said Saturday when asked if he had considered seeking a buyout. “I haven’t even thought about it. I’m locked in to my thing right now. It’s kind of hard to think about something that I’ve never pursued and never talked about with them.”

Rose fell out of the New York rotation earlier in the season.

Rose is making $14.5 million this season with a club option for the 2023-24 season worth $15.6 million.

“No. Y’all heard something? I’ve just been locked in, doing my recovery. [I] talk to Thibs about the team, talk to Leon about the team, but other than that, I haven’t talked to them about [a buyout],” Rose said. “I think that we’ve been so transparent in the past that if I was thinking about moving, or they was to move me somewhere, they’d give me a heads up.”

Mat Ishbia Looks At Kevin Durant Trade 'As A Vision And A Decision', 'No Risk At All'

Feb 21, 2023 11:15 AM

Mat Ishbia doesn't see the trade the Phoenix Suns made for Kevin Durant as having any risk at all given the timeframe in which he plans to own the franchise.

"I think there is no risk," said Ishbia to Sports Illustrated. "I don't look at it as a risk at all. I look at it as a vision and a decision. And you go with your decisions and you run with it. It doesn't mean everything's going to work out or that we’re going to win multiple championships and you know it was right. You have to play the games.

"However I don't look at it like a risk at all. I know what the vision is. I'm going to own this team for 50 years, so like zero [risk]. I don't need to come in and win in the first year. But at the same time, there's nothing in my life that I don't want to win at. We're going to try to win everything we do. And so I don't look at it as risk at all. Everyone can say what they want to say. If something happened and we didn't win, it was still the right thing. You make the decision with the best available information you have at the time, you make the decision and then you run with it and you try to make it work."

Ishbia was also asked to describe what type of owner he sees himself being in support of James Jones.

"I think my job as an owner is to put great people in position with all the resources they need to make the right decisions and then support them, good or bad, with those decisions," said Ishbia. "I'm not watching film on the draft picks. James will recommend who he thinks and we'll talk about and he might understand my vision on how character really matters and leadership really matters and that I'm not willing to sacrifice that. So he'll know my vision of what matters to me and what I believe in as a human being and as a leader of an organization. But James will pick the best player. And that's his job. I'm not calling Monty Williams to ask him why we played someone. That's not my thing. I'll watch the game like a fan and cheer the team on. That's what my job is to do, is to be the biggest supporter, to give Monty Williams all the support he needs, to give James Jones all the support they need, to give the players all the support they need."

Kevin Durant: Trade Requests 'Great For League'

Feb 18, 2023 4:04 PM

Kevin Durant believes trade requests are "great for the league" because it brings more attention to the NBA and also gives players the opportunity to improve their situation.

"Teams have been trading players and making acquisitions for a long time," said Durant during his Saturday media availability at All-Star weekend. "Now a player can dictate where he wants to go, leave in free agency or demand a trade, it’s just part of the game now."

Durant requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets to the Phoenix Suns before the deadline. It was Durant's second trade request in under a year though the first one was not granted.

Durant previously left the Oklahoma City Thunder and Golden State Warriors during his two prior free agency periods.

Kyrie Irving echoed Durant's comments when he was asked the same question.

“When did it become terrible to make great business decisions for yourself, your happiness and your peace of mind?" said Irving. "Not every employer you’re going to get along with.”

Suns Could Sign Kevin Love

Feb 17, 2023 7:43 AM

The Phoenix Suns have emerged as contenders to sign Kevin Love, following Love's buyout from the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Miami Heat are also interested in the veteran big man.

Phoenix still has one open roster spot after signing Terrence Ross, following his buyout from the Orlando Magic. The Suns also have their prorated Taxpayer Midlevel Exception to offer in terms of salary, which would likely beat Miami's offer of a prorated veteran minimum contract.

Love was also teammates with Phoenix GM James Jones on the 2016 title-winning Cavaliers. Phoenix has been looking to add one more big man to their rotation, after trading away Dario Saric at the trade deadline.

This season Love has averaged 8.5 points and 6.8 rebounds in 20 minutes per game. All are career-lows for the 34-year-old. Love was dropped from the Cavs rotation nearly a month ago, which caused him to seek a buyout of his $28.9 million expiring contract.

Mat Ishbia Bought 57 Percent Stake Of Suns For $2.28 Billion

Feb 16, 2023 10:31 PM

Mat Ishbia bought a 57 percent controlling stake of the Phoenix Suns for $2.28 billion, sources told ESPN's Baxter Holmes. Ishbia is buying his stake at a $4 billion valuation.

Robert Sarver personally sold his 37 percent stake to Ishbia for $1.48 billion. Sarver's group bought the franchise from Jerry Colangeo for $401 million in 2004.

Ishbia assumed ownership of the Suns shortly before the trade deadline and their trade for Kevin Durant.

Kevin Durant: Nets Trading Kyrie Irving 'Took Away Our Identity'

Feb 16, 2023 10:26 PM

Kevin Durant had his introductory press conference with the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, one week after he was traded by the Brooklyn Nets.

Durant said he ultimately pushed for a trade to Phoenix largely because Kyrie Irving put in his own trade request to get out of Brooklyn. Durant acknowledged that Irving's trade request "took away our identity" as a team.

"I was upset that we couldn't finish," Durant said. "I thought we had some good momentum. We were finally building a culture that we always wanted. I felt like every game we were building our chemistry, but I didn't know what was going on with Kyrie and his situation with the organization, so I didn't really focus on that. I only focused on what we were doing on the court, and it was a blow to our team. It just took away our identity. He was a huge, huge part to what we do. His game, he's a Hall of Fame player, a great, great player, that can do everything on the floor and we relied on that.

"So without him we didn't have a clear identity. So that was tough for me to stomach. I love playing with those guys throughout the year. I felt like we had dudes that were stepping up and doing stuff that they didn't do on their previous teams. So I enjoyed everything about it -- it was tough not finishing the season, but I just tried to move forward as quickly as I can and try to figure something out for myself, but also still focus on trying to rehab and get back. So it all happened so fast, but I'm glad it worked out this way."
